The W hotel lies at the entrance to the UCLA campus and was originally built as a residential apartment.  It had been transformed into a hotel many years prior, but the rooms had partitions between living and sleeping spaces, rather than having a contemporary open plan.

AKA was tasked with redividing the floors of the hotel to achieve a higher room count, while creating more open plans and greater accessibility.  The hotel was given a new palette and lighter feeling inspired by the LA skyline.

In addition to the room remodel, AKA was asked to design a poolside bar inside an Airstream Bambi, which we sourced in Tennessee and had remodeled and craned into the side.  The existing foliage was photographed in high resolution, then printed and applied to the Bambi as a wrap – when the bar is closed it blends into its environment.
