Acne Studios, a Stockholm-based fashion brand, is known for quirky innovation and breaking the rules.  Their Los Angeles flagship store is a blend of disparate elements, picking up cues from the surrounding urban context, but running with them in another direction entirely. ‘

The terrazzo floor was inspired by the flooring throughout the Eastern Columbia building and surrounding sidewalks.  Instead of a traditional color palette and pattern, they opted for a custom pink terrazzo with large black oval-shaped stones.  The store “walls” are made from perforated metal, which picks up on the dotted quality of the floors.  Materials are both solid and light, serious and fun.

The northern half of the store is given to Il Caffe, a Swedish-owned coffee shop and restaurant.  Il Caffe has raw concrete finishes, built-in seating and a terrace that spills out onto Broadway.

The ceiling lighting was concealed by a field of hanging lamellas which were suspended from the concrete deck above.  This enabled the use of (Title 24 compliant) standard LED fixtures and left the high raw deck above – avoiding a hard lid.  The ceiling is both low and high at the same time.
